2.5 Language Acquisition/ Factors Influencing Individual Behaviour Flashcards
B.F. Skinner
- Belives in nuture
Believed language was developed by set habits - The person learning the langauge is at a blank state and have no knowledge
- Language development comes from operant conditioning
Reinforcement
Strengthens Behaviour
positive Reinforcement
- adding something (stimulus) to increase behaviour.
Negative Reinforcement
- Taking something away to increase behaviour
Punishment
Reduces Behaviour
Positive Punishment
- Adding something negative to decrease unwanted behaviour.
Negative Punishment
- Taking something away to decrease unwanted behaviour.
Examaple of stimulus and rspose
Stimulus – Baby sees mother enter a room
Response – Baby says “Mama!”
Event – Parent is ecstatic and hugs the child = positive reinforcemen
Since the response is pleasant, “Mama” becomes a conditioned response to mother entering the room (stimulus)
- SKinner belives experinces and habitis is how langauge (verbal and non-verbal) is devolped
Noam Chomsky
- Humans are born with language acquisition device
- Chomsky believes that our ability to learn language is built in from birth
- Experiences activate this internal ability
- Nature (biological factors) have greater impact than nurture (life experiences)
Behaviourism
skinner
: principle → say what I say
Nativism:
chomsky
principle → it is all in your mind
Support for Chomsky Theory
- Children of all cultures acquire languages in the same manner
- There are specialized areas of the brain that are used for language
- The child does not need a trigger to begin speaking
Children go through stages of language acquisition in which they discover certain parts of the language - ther ei soptimal age to leran lanaguage
The Brain
Broca’s Area
Wernicke’s Area
Broca’s Area
Responsible for speech production, language processing and language comprehension
Left side of the brain is usually responsible for language and this is larger in size
Wernicke’s Area
Involved in the comprehension of spoken language
