Q

What affects performance?

A

The presence of an audience or Coactors increases the arousal level of the performer

An increase in arousal will make it more likely for the dominant response to occur.

If the skill is simple or the performer is autonomous the D- response will be correct and performance will be good

If the skill is complex or if the performer is cognitive the dominant response is likely to be incorrect and performance may deteriorate.

Q

Evaluation apprehension - what does the theory state?

Why does arousal levels increase?

What is presence of trial?

A

This theory stated it is not the presence of the audience alone that raised arousal levels, in fact the presence of others can have a calming effect.

Arousal level increased only the others present were evaluating or were perceived by the performer as judging the performance.

Presence of a trial (Someone judging you). Or a sport where you practice alone but then compete with judges watching you.

Q

Describe the term Evaluation Apprehension

using a practical example

A

Evaluation Apprehension occurs when a performers arousal level increase as they believe the crowd or others to be judging them. The theory states it is not just the presence of ‘others’ such as the crowd, it is the belief that the others are judging your performance.

For example if the netballer believed that their was a scout watching her from the County Club her arousal level may increase.
