FEEDBACK Flashcards
What is feedback?
Feedback is a vital part of information processing, which can help to provide confidence and motivation for the performer.
Feedback has an important role to play in correcting errors and improving performance.
What is intrinsic feedback?
This type of feedback happens within the performer. Information received by the athlete as a direct result of producing a movement through the kinaesthetic senses - feelings from muscles, joints and balance.
Accurately performed technique give internal feelings of satisfaction and confidence.
What is extrinsic feedback?
This feedback comes from results and match analysis. There are 2 lines of extrinsic feedback:
Knowledge of results – the outcome
Knowledge of performance – how well the performer played.
Examples of extrinsic feedback?
Watching a performance back from video
Listening to a coaches comments
Final score in a game
What is positive feedback?
this involves information that rewards or praises a performance. This helps strengthen the S-R bond and can be extremely motivating to the athlete.
What is negative feedback?
This can be in the form of criticism and may be centred around poor aspects of a performance or results.
What is knowledge of results/performance?
This type of feedback is external. Information is provided to the athlete before or after the performance based on the result or individual performances. This is usually provided and received well by elite performers.
Why is knowledge of results/performance important?
Practical example
This type of feedback is important to develop kinaesthetic awareness within a performer.
i.e. a trampoline or gymnastics coach may use results or a video to slow down performance and offer feedback.
What should feedback include?
Facilitate intrinsic feedback to promote internal feelings (kinaesthesis)
Concise
Provide it immediately after performance
Not too much and enough to get improvements
Constructive – focus on a weakness and how to improve
Positive and highlight strengths
