What are the effects of goal setting?
Development of self-confidence and self-efficacy
Increased motivation levels
Increased selective attention
To monitor performance
Outcome oriented goals:
The performance is judged against others and end result.
i.e. to win a race/competition.
Performance oriented goals:
Judge performance against his/her own standards. e.g. to beat best time, to have a good start or to maintain an effective breathing action.
Process-oriented goals:
Relates to development of specific technique or tactics. e.g. Tighter tumble turn with greater leg drive off the wall in order to improve performance.
Coaches might consider the following principles when setting targets:
S - Specific, targets must be to the point.
M - Measurable, can it be measured and compared.
A - Achievable, the target must be challenging but yet reachable.
R - Realistic, matched to the performers skill level.
T - Time bound, set for a particular time to be completed.
