CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM Flashcards
What does the cardiovascular system refer to?
The cardiovascular system refers to the heart, blood vessels and the blood.
What sort of circulatory system does the heart operate by?
The heart (cardiac muscle) operates a double circulatory system in which blood flows through the heart twice.
What is Pulmonary circulation?
- i.e. flow of deoxygenated blood to the lungs and oxygenated blood back to the heart.
What is Systemic circulation?
- i.e. movement of oxygenated blood from the heart through the rest of the body and deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
Why does the left side of the cardiac have a thicker wall?
The left side of the cardiac muscle has a thicker wall to allow the heart to contract with more force on the oxygenated side.
What is the RIGHT ATRIUM?
The upper chamber receives deoxygenated blood
What is the LEFT ATRIUM?
An upper chamber receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
What is the RIGHT VENTRICLE?
A lower chamber containing deoxygenated blood
What is the LEFT VENTRICLE?
A lower chamber containing oxygenated blood
