JOINTS Flashcards
What joint is the shoulder?
a ball and socket joint
Where does the shoulder joint fit?
The head of the humerus fits into a cavity on the scapula.
What does the structure of a ball and socket joint do?
This type of joint allows the most movement.
Its structure also makes it one of the least stable joints, so it is heavily reliant on ligaments and muscles to increase its stability.
Shoulder joint
The following muscles listed are the agonists responsible for the movement pattern on the Sagittal plane (Flexion and extension) and frontal plane (Adduction and Abduction)
Flexion?
Extension?
Adduction?
Abduction?
- Anterior Deltoid
- Posterior Deltoid
- Latissimus Dorsi
- Middle Deltoid

What type of joint is the elbow?
Hinge joint
Where is the elbow joint?
With the distal (far) end of the humerus articulating with the proximal (near) end of the radius and ulna.
Movement can take place in one plane only, allowing only flexion and extension

Flexion
Extension
Biceps Brachii
Triceps Brachii
What joint type is the wrist?
condyloid joint
Where is the wrist joint?
with the radius, ulna and carpals making up the joint.

Flexion??
Extension??
Wrist Flexors
Wrist Extensors
Where is the hip joint?
where the head of the femur fits into the pelvic girdle. These movements would occur on the Sagittal plane
