SOCIAL FACILITATION AND INHIBITION Flashcards
What is Social facilitation?
Social facilitation the positive influence of others who may be watching or competing
What is Social inhibition?
Social inhibition the negative influence of others who may be watching or competing, which leads to a decrease in sports performance
What are the effects of performance?
The presence of an audience or Coactors increases the arousal level of the performer
An increase in arousal will make it more likely for the dominant response to occur.
If the skill is simple or the performer is autonomous the D- response will be correct and performance will be good
If the skill is complex or if the performer is cognitive the dominant response is likely to be incorrect and performance may deteriorate.
What does the theory state?
This theory stated it is not the presence of the audience alone that raised arousal levels, in fact the presence of others can have a calming effect.
Arousal level increased only the others present were evaluating or were perceived by the performer as judging the performance.
Presence of a trial (Someone judging you). Or a sport where you practice alone but then compete with judges watching you.
