Macronutrients
Types of food you need in large amounts in your diet
Complex carbohydrates
Help to provide energy for exercise, should be half your daily intake
Simple carbohydrates
Found in their natural form as fruit
Fats
Provide energy, help muscles work. Found in butter, coocking oil etc
Proteins
Important to help build muscles and to repair damaged tissue, especially important to strength athletes, e.g rugby
Micronutrients
Parts of your food that you need for normal growth, but only in small amounts - usually call vitamins and minerals
Vitamins
Come in 2 groups, water-soluble and fat-soluble. Essential for the body to function properly
Minerals
Essential for a healthy body, 2 key minerals needed are calcium and iron.
Water
Half your body weight, holds oxygen and is the main component of many cells. Transports nutrients around the body
Dehydration
If you don’t replace fluids lost during exercise, you may become dehydrated
Fibre
Adds bulk to food and aids the functioning of the digestive system.
