Soc12: The Skeletal System Flashcards
5 functions of the skeletal system
- Protects vital organs
- Produces red blood cells
- Stores calcium
- Provides joints for movement
- Provides muscle attachment
What are the bones in the torso?
Clavical, scapula, ribcage, pelvis, sternum
What are the bones in the arm?
Humerus, radius, vina, carples, metacarples, phalonges
What are the bones in the legs?
Femur, patella, tarsals, metatarsles, pholanges, tibia, fibula
Long bones
Long bones are longer than they are wide
For example: phalanges
Short bones
Short bones are generally the same size in length, width and thickness.
Example: carpals
Flat bones
Flat bones usually protect organs or offer a good surface for muscles to attach to.
Example: ribcage
Irregular bones
Irregular bones have odd shapes and vary in function.
For example: the vertebrae
Condyloid joint
A condyloid joint is similar to a ball and socket, but the ball rests against the end of a bone, rather than inside a socket. This allows circular motion
Pivot joint
Allows rotary movement
