Principles Of Training Flashcards
FITT
Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type
Specificity
Matching training to the requirements of an activity.
Progressive overload
The term ‘overload’ is used to describe when an athlete trains more than they normally do, this is the only way athletes can improve fitness.
Individual needs
When planning a PEP the needs of the athlete must come first, using another person’s programme would not work as they will have different starting points and needs
Frequency
How often you train. Frequency can be adjusted to help you manage progressive overload. For example, training every other day would allow a rest to for the body to recover on the days between training
Intensity
How hard someone trains. Intensity may vary depending on the aims and type of training. For example, intensity for a runner would mean raising your heart rate in the target zone
Time
How long each training session must last in order to be of any benefit and to achieve improvement.
Type
The method of training to achieve particular goals. Type overlaps with the principles of specificity. For example, sprinters training specifically to improve their speed.
