Soc21 Planes and Axes Flashcards
Sagittal plane
The Sagittal plane divides the body from top to bottom, (vertically), resulting in a left side and a right side - flexion and extension
Frontal plane
The Frontal plane also divides the body from top to bottom (vertically), but front and back sections - adduction and abduction
Transverse plane
The Transverse plane divides the body across the middle (horizontally),
giving a top section (also known as ‘superior’) and a bottom section (‘inferior) - rotation
Frontal axis
The Frontal axis runs from side to side - this allows flexion and extension
Sagittal axis
The Sagittal axis runs from front to back - allows abduction and adduction
Vertical axis
The Vertical axis runs from top to bottom, - allows rotation of the body in an upright position
Which planes work with which axis to provide which movements and an example of each
Saggital Plane (flex and ext) = Frontal Axis (flex and ext) - Front Somersault
Frontal Plane (abd and add) = Saggital Axis (abd and add) - Cartwheel (think about a clock)
Transverse Plane (rotation) = Vertical Axis (rotation) - Twist
