Soc10 Preventing Injuries Flashcards
Soft tissue injury
Movement outside of their normal range can tear or pull tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage
Sprains
A sprain is a damaged ligament. One of the most common sprains in sport is a twisted ankle. Sprains often occur when stretching too far past the normal range of a joint, but can also be caused by falling or colliding with an opponent.
Strains
A strain is a twist, pull or tear of a muscle or a tendon. Most common strains are in the back and the hamstrings. Two examples of strains are golfers elbow and tennis elbow.
Torn cartilage
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact on the bones while reducing the friction during sports/ activity. Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long-term overused
Fractures (4)
A fracture is broken or a cracked bone. There are several types: stress fracture; compound fractures; inclosed and simple.
Examples of simple/closed fractures (5)
Greenstick, transverse, impacted, comminuted and oblique
Dislocations
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out its normal position. Often occurs as a result of a hard blow which causes one of the bones to be placed.
Abrasions
Abrasions or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface like a concrete playground or arficial pitches.
Concussion
Concussion is an injury normally caused by a blow to the head and can happen in many ways.
The 5 ways in which we can minimise injury
Correct application of the principles of training. Correct application and adherence to the rules. Use of appropriate protective clothing. Checking of equipment and facilities. Use of a warm-up and cool-down
