Soc12 Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system?
Protection of vital organs, muscle attachement, joints for movement, storing calcium and phosphorus, producing red and white blood cells.
What are the bones of the torso (5)?
Scapula, clavical, sternum, rib cage, pelvis.
What are the bones of the arm (6)?
Ulna, radius, carples, metacarples, phalanges and humerous.
What are the bones in the legs (7)?
Femur, tibia, fibula, patella, tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges.
What are the bones in the spine (5) and how many vertibrae does each bone have?
Cervical (7), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacrum (5 fused) and coccyx (4 fused)
What are the bones in the head? (2)
Cranium and the mandible.
Irrelgular bones
Irregular bones have odd shapes and vary in function. Eg vertibrae. Protect vital organs
Flat bones
Flat bones usually protect organs or offer a good surface for muscles to attach onto. Eg scapula, cranium patella and clavicle.
Short bones
Short bones are generally the same size in length, width and thickness. The only short bones are the carpals and the tarsals. They are for weight bearing.
Long bones
Long bones are longer than they are wide. A long bone has a shaft and two ends. Long bones don’t have to be long becuase the phalanges (in the fingers) are long bones. A femur is also a long bone. Allows movement
What are the 5 functions of the sleletal system?
Protecting vital organs, provides muscle attachment, provides joints for movement, storing calcium and phosphorus and produces white and red blood cells.
What are the 4 bone classifications?
Short, long, flat and irregular
What are the 4 joints?
Ball and socket joints, hinge joints, condyloid joints and pivot joints
What is a ball and socket joint and example?
Rounded head of a long bone fits into a cupped shaped hole (the socket). The hip and shoulder joints are ball and socket joints.
What is a hinge joint and an example?
A hinge joints allows backward and forward motion like a bicep curl or a hinge on a door. There are 3 hinge joints the elbow, the knee and ankle.
