Q

Irrelgular bones

A

Irregular bones have odd shapes and vary in function. Eg vertibrae. Protect vital organs

Q

Flat bones

A

Flat bones usually protect organs or offer a good surface for muscles to attach onto. Eg scapula, cranium patella and clavicle.

Q

Short bones

A

Short bones are generally the same size in length, width and thickness. The only short bones are the carpals and the tarsals. They are for weight bearing.

Q

Long bones

A

Long bones are longer than they are wide. A long bone has a shaft and two ends. Long bones don’t have to be long becuase the phalanges (in the fingers) are long bones. A femur is also a long bone. Allows movement

Q

What is a ball and socket joint and example?

A

Rounded head of a long bone fits into a cupped shaped hole (the socket). The hip and shoulder joints are ball and socket joints.

Q

What is a hinge joint and an example?

A

A hinge joints allows backward and forward motion like a bicep curl or a hinge on a door. There are 3 hinge joints the elbow, the knee and ankle.

Q

What are condyloid joints and an example?

A

Condyloid joints is like a ball and socket joint but the ball rests against the head of a bone rather than a socket. This provides circular motion in places like the wrist.

17
Q

What is a pivot jont and example?

A

A pivot joint allows bones to rotate. One cyclindrical shaped bone rotates another bone ligament that makes a ring round it. There are 3 pivot points in the body the elbow, wrist and neck. In the neck the axel and the axis are the first two vertibrae that allow movement.
