Soc16- Blood Vessels & Blood Distribution Flashcards
What do people which are born at altitudes have about their cell count which we don’t have?
A high cell count
Why do people who are born at higher altitudes have a higher cell count?
There is less oxygen in the air meaning there blood is more efficient at producing the cells.
Is training at high altitudes good?
Yes as athletes from these countries always manage to do well in long distance events. E.g. Kenya
What a low blood cell count also known as?
Anaemia as it causes you breathlessness and you begin to lack energy.
Why do some people have a low blood cell count?
It is caused by a loss of blood. A lack of iron can cause anaemia as iron is needed for energy and strength
What happens to your blood distribution when you exercise?
The distribution of your blood changes as your muscles need blood for movement “Vascular Shunting”.
What else happens when your blood distribution changes?
Your heart beats faster and your muscles tense up, your reflexes also become faster.
What happens as the muscles work harder?
Your muscles start to drop in oxygen levels as they begin working anaerobically (building lactic acid)
What is the function of white blood cells?
They have an important function as they are the defence system of the body. They destroy illnesses, viruses and bacteria
What is blood plasma?
Blood plasma is a yellow-coloured liquid which contains a range of substances to help circulation between cells.
Name one of the three main components of the blood.
Having the right cell count can make the difference between health & illness.
Name another of the components of the blood.
A pigment of the blood is haemoglobin which gives it the red colour, it attracts oxygen to the blood
What is most of the blood made from?
Red blood cells or Erythrocytes
