Specificity
Matching the requirements of training to the requirements of a certain sport or activity. E.g Weight training for a weight lifter not cardio.
Progressive overload.
When an athlete trains more than they normally do and increase this gradually. This is the only way to improve and not stay stagnant.
Individual Needs
Matching the training to the requirements or capabilities of the individual. If the regime is too hard they may become demotivated or injured.

How often you are training,overlaps with rest and recovery

How hard you train, depends on aims and type of training
