Soc 21- Planes And Axes Of Movement Flashcards
What are planes?
Planes are theoretical divisions that divide the human body into sections. There are three planes of motion in the body.
What are the three planes of motion in the body?
. The Sagittal plane
. The Frontal plane
. The Transverse plane
How does the Sagittal plane divide the body?
The Sagittal plane divides the body from top to bottom (vertically), resulting in a left and right side.
What movements are allowed by the Sagittal plane?
Flexion and extension.
How does the Frontal plane divide the body?
The Frontal plane also divides the body from top to bottom (vertically), but front and back sections.
What movements are allowed by the Frontal plane?
Adduction and abduction.
How does the transverse plane divide the body?
The Transverse body divides the body across the middle (horizontally), giving a top section (also known as ‘superior’) and a bottom section (‘inferior’).
What movement is allowed by the Transverse plane?
Rotation.
What are examples of movements in the Sagittal plane?
Walking or squats.
What are examples of movements in the Frontal plane?
A netball throw or golf swing.
What are examples of movements that are in the Transverse plane?
Torso rotations.
What are axes?
Our joints rotate around axes, and these axes allow movement to take place in one of the planes.
What are the three different axes used to describe how the body can rotate?
. The Frontal axis
. The Sagittal axis
. The Vertical axis
Where does the Frontal axis run?
The Frontal axis runs from side to side, formed by the intersection of the Frontal and Transverse planes.
What movements does the Frontal axis allow?
Flexion and extension.
