Soc 17: The Respiratory System Flashcards
Inhaled air percentages
20% oxygen
0.4%carbon dioxide
Exhaled air percentages
16% oxygen
4% carbon dioxide
What is vital capacity?
The greatest amount of air that can pass into and out of the lungs
What is tidal volume?
The amount of air inspired with each normal breath at rest or during exercise.
What is Respiration?
The movement from air to the cells in our body.
What is the diaphragm?
The primary dome shaped muscle used to separate the chest from the rest of the body cavity.
What is the trachea?
The tube that takes air into the lungs (windpipe).
What are bronchi?
Tubes that take air from the trachea to the bronchiole.
What are bronchioles?
Smaller branches coming off bronchi.
What are Alveoli?
Tiny air sacs where gaseous exchange occurs.
What is Haemoglobin?
A type of protein found in red blood cells to make them look red.
What is gaseous exchange?
The delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and removal of carbon dioxide.
What is Oxygen debt?
The amount of oxygen needed at the end of exercise to break down lactic acid.
What is Anaerobic exercise?
Working at high intensity level without oxygen for production.
What is VO2 max?
The volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at max capacity.
