Soc:15 The Structure Of The Heart Flashcards
What are the four main chambers?
Right atrium,Right Ventricle,Left Atrium, Left Ventricle
What are the three blood vessels?
Arteries, Veins, Capillaries.
What is the function of the three blood vessels?
Arteries- Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart at a high pressure with blood to the rest of the body.
Veins- Carry deoxygenated blood to the heart at a low pressure.
Capillaries-Connects arteries and veins.
What are the 3 functions of the Cardiovascular System?
- ) To carry oxygen around the body and remove carbon dioxide through respiration.
- ) Control body temperature.
- ) Seal wounds.
How does the heart pump blood?
The ‘lub-dub’ phases. Systole phase- Blood is pumped from the atria to the ventricles, then both ventricles contract. This causes deoxygenated blood in the right ventricle to move to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. At the same time oxygenated blood in the left ventricle moves into the aorta which leads to the rest of the body.
Diastole phase- This is when the heart is refilling with blood. The ventricles are refilling and relaxing whereas the atria are just relaxing.
What is blood pressure?
Measure of the force that your heart uses to pump the blood around your body. In sport, a higher blood pressure can indicate a higher risk of health problems in the future. Top number is your systolic blood pressure and the bottom is your diastolic blood pressure. Huge factor in fitness.
