Soc:14 The Muscular System Flashcards
What muscle is muscle is triangular and at the top of the shoulder?
Deltoid
At what area is the pectoralis major?
Upper torso (chest)
Give one sporting example of when the latissimus dorsi is used?
Butterfly stroke in swimming.
What is the function of the bicep?
Flex the arm at the elbow.
What is the function of the tricep?
Extend the arm at the elbow.
Where are the external obliques located on the body?
Next to the abs.
What is the function of the gluteals?
Adduct and extend the leg at the hips, pull the leg backwards.
Give one sporting example of you use hip flexors in sport or training?
Doing high knees as part of a warm-up for football.
Where are the quadriceps?
Four muscles found on the front of the upper leg.
What is the function of the hamstring?
Flex the leg at the knee
Where is the gastrocnemius located on the body?
Lower leg, starts at back of femur and ends at back of ankle.
Give one example of when the tibialis anterior is used in sport or training?
Ski jumping.
Muscle fibres
Make up voluntary (skeletal) muscle; divided into type 1, type lla and type llx.
What are type 1 muscle fibres?
Slow twitch muscle fibres ; suited to low intensity work,e.g, marathon running, as they can be used for a long period of time without fatiguing.
What are type lla muscle fibres ?
Fast twitch muscle fibres used in anaerobic work; can be improved through endurance training to increase their resistance to fatigue.
What are type llx muscle fibres ?
Fast twitch muscle fibres used in anaerobic work and can generate much greater force than other fibre types, but fatigue quickly.
Define the term ‘Myoglobin’ ?
A red pigment that transports oxygen to the muscles.
Deltoid location and function?
Located on the top of the shoulder. Move the arm in all directions at the shoulder.
Pectoralis major location and function?
Covering the chest. Adduct the arm at the shoulder.
Latissimus dorsi location and function?
Sheet of muscle from lower spine up to deltoid. Adduct and extend the arm at the shoulder.
Biceps location and function?
Front of the upper arm. Flex the arm at the elbow.
Triceps location and function?
Back of upper arm. Extend the arm at the elbow.
External obliques location and function?
Located from the lower half of ribs down to the pelvis. Pull the chest downwards; flex and rotate the spinal column; one side contacting creates a bend.
Gluteals location and function?
Forms the buttox. Attached to femur bone. Adduct and extend leg at the hips, pull the leg backwards.
Hip flexors location and function?
In front of hip- connects the leg pelvis and abdomen. Flex the hip, help move the leg and knee up towards the body.
Quadriceps location and function?
Four muscles found on the front of the upper leg. Extend the leg at the knee.
Hamstrings location and function?
Found on the back of the leg, stretching from the bottom part of the pelvis to the tibia.
Gastrocnemius location and function?
Starts at femur and comes together to form the achilles at the soleus muscle. Point the toes, help flex the knee.
Tibialis Anterior location and function?
Runs down the shin. Pull the toes up towards the shin.
