Performance Enhancing Drugs
A substance that can be taken in a variety of ways to produce expected and welcome physical and/ or physiological effects.
Taking these drugs can increase the level of performance, but can also cause some side effects that are unpleasant.
Beta Blockers
Block the effects of adrenaline, lowering heart rate and anxiety. Reduces muscle tremors and shaking; increases focus
What sport are beta blockers most advantageous ?
Snooker, archery, shooting
Beta blockers possible side effects
Dangerously low heart rate, low blood pressure, dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness
Narcotics/analgesics
Temporarily reduce pain by depressing the central nervous system
Allow athletes to continue to compete whilst injured
Provide a sense of elation and being unbeatable
