The epidermis is made of what?
Stratified squamous epithelial cells and contains keratinocytes
What are keratinocytes?
Keratin cells, fibrous proteins that give skin a protective quality
The epidermis is broken down into what 5 layers?
Stratum Corneum Stratum Lucidum Stratum Granulosum Stratum Spinosum Stratum Basale
What is the dermis made of?
Made of mostly Dense CT and is stretchy and strong
What are the 2 major regions of the dermis?
Papillary Layer: Upper dermal region
Reticular Layer: deepest dermal layer
What is the hypodermis?
Composed of adipose tissue, lower most layer of skin, also called Subcutaneous tissue
What are the functions of the Hypodermis?
Shock absorber, insulation for extreme temp, anchors skin to the rest of the body
Damage only to the epidermis, are is red, swollen, and temporary discomfort
1st Degree Burn
Damage to epidermis and upper region of the dermis, area is red, painful, and blisters appear
2nd Degree Burn
Destroy entire thickness of the skin, area is gray-white or blackened with no pain in the area of the burn due to destroyed nerve endings
3rd Degree Burns
What is the most common type of cancer in humans?
Skin cancer
What is the most noted risk factor for cancer?
Overexposure to UV radiation in sunlight
