Shoulder Flashcards
Rotator cuff muscles or “SITS” muscles
Supraspinatus (super = top) abducts the arm snd can lift the arm alone even if the deltoid is paralyzed
Infraspinatus - performs external rotation
Teres Minor - performs external rotation
Subscapularis (underneath) - internally rotates and adducts the arm
Shoulder has more than one joint and two important but contrasting function
Flexible but also provide strong stable fixed point
Huge range of motion - super flexible and super stable
Shoulder complex is made up of three bones:
Clavicle (collar bone) - most frequently broken bones
Scapula (shoulder blade)
Humerus (bone of arm)
Muscles of the Scapula
Serratus anterior - covers the lateral rib cage and helps to hold the scapula in place (Abduction and rotation)
Subclavis - depresses the clavicle
Pectoralis minor - helps stabilize the scapula and pulls it down and forward
Levator scapulae - elevates and downwardly rotates the scapula
Rhomboids - adducts the scapula and assists in downward rotation
Trapezius - large diamond shaped muscle that adducts the scapula
Three joints of shoulder
Glenohumeral joint - primary joint located between head of humerus and glenoid cavity of scapula - extremely mobile but not very stable
Sternoclavicular joint - located at the medial end of the clavicle and allows flexion, extension, elevation, and depression and limited rotation of the clavicle
Acromioclavicular joint - saddle joint and is located at the lateral end of the clavicle and allows some gliding movement
Movement of scapula
Elevation
Depression
Lateral rotation
Medial rotation
Rotation downward
Rotation upward
