Knee/Leg Flashcards
Bones of knee/leg
Knee: femur and patella (kneecap)
Leg: tibia (shinbone) and fibula (thinnest bone in body)
Joints of knee
Tibiofemoral - tibia connects with the femur
patellofemoral - femur connects with the kneecap
Knee joint is a flexion/extension joint
Muscles of knee
Quads have 4 parts:
Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis (VMO) and vastus intermedius
Sartorius - crosses the hip and knee joint, the longest muscle in the body - also part of the quads
Adductors
Hamstrings
What exercises fire the VMO
Footwork on reformer and Tower (Cadillac), half in pulses on ball of foot or toe, high heel shoe
Side Lying VMO on reformer
Standing VMO/Reverse Scooter on reformer
Footwork in
VMO Press on Chair
Menisci
C shaped discs made of cartilage that sit on top of the tibial condyles and provide better shock absorption and stabilization
Slightly mobile and aid in distribution of synovial fluid
ACL
Hamstrings duplicate the action of the ACL
When ACL is compromised, hamstrings should be strengthened
