Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)
The largest and most important neck muscle
Primary muscle for movement of the neck
Plays a role in side bending, contralateral rotation, flexion, and extension
Runs from the skull just behind the earlobe to the sternum (breast bone) and clavicle (collarbone)
Upper Trapezius
Runs from base of skull to acromion (shoulder blade) and clavicle (collarbone)
Muscle responsible for hunching the shoulders and is usually tense
Erector Spinae Muscles
Not just one muscle but a bundle of muscles and tendons
Runs more or less vertically
Extends throughout the lumbar, thoracic and cervical regions
Lies in the groove to the side of the vertebral column
Levator Scapulae Muscle
Along with the trapezius muscle, makes a shoulder shrug possible
