Arms Flashcards
Muscles of the arms
Coracobrachialis - flexes and adducts (brings in)
Biceps - primarily a flexor and supinator of the forearm but also involved in abduction and adduction to Radius bone
Triceps - 3 origins with the long head assisting in adduction but primarily a forearm extensor
Pectoralis major - many functions including flexion, extension, and adduction with medial rotation
Latissimus dorsi (lats) performs extension, adduction, and medial (internal) rotation of the arm
Teres major - also performs extension, adduction, and medial (internal) rotation of the arm
Deltoid - bulky muscle and acts as a shock absorber- main action is to abduct arm
SITS muscles
Bones of forearm and hand
Radius - superficial and has a palpable edge that extends from the elbow to the wrist
Ulna - on thumb side is lateral to the ulna and is partially buried in muscle
Carpals - eight peddle-sized bones that form two rows
Metacarpals - five long bones spanning the palm of the hand
Phalanges - bones of the fingers
Arm movements
Affect the thoracic spine and ribcage
Flexion of the arms creates extension of the spine and opens the anterior ribcage
Extension of the arms causes flexion of the spine and closes the ribcage ie roll up
