Foot/Ankle Flashcards
Four primary muscles that move feet toes and ankles
Tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, soleus and peroneals (or fibularis longus and brevis)
Bones of foot and ankle
26 bones makeup the ankle, instep (arch) and toes of the foot
7 tarsals, includes talus and calcaneus
5 metatarsals
14 phalanges
Muscles of leg and foot
Four groups
Large gastrocnemius and soleus form the calf muscles
Fibularis (also known as peroneus) longus and brevis slender muscles located along the lateral side of the leg
Extensors of ankle and toes (tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus)
Small flexors of the ankle and toes (tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus, and flexor hallucis longus)
Tibialis anterior
Strongest dorsiflexor and assists in inversion
It presses the baby toe down - If it’s weak, the baby toe drifts up
Gastrocnemius
Responsible for plantar flexion of the ankle and flexion and medial rotation of the knee
Soleus
Responsible for plantar flexion of the ankle especially during walking
Peroneals (AKA fibularis longus and brevis)
Responsible for plantar flexion and eversion (presses big toe down)
When it’s weak, big toe will drift up
