Muscle Contractions Flashcards
Concentric
Shortening of muscle against a force (curling a weight or abs on a roll up)
Eccentric
Lengthening of muscle while it contracts (letting a weight down or the abs on a roll down)
Isometric
Contraction without movement or change in length (plank position or pushing a wall)
Isotonic
Contraction tension remains unchanged and the muscle’s length changes (lifting an object at a constant speed)
Myotatic
Stretch reflex, a contraction in response to a muscle stretch, it is a reflex
Agonist
Prime mover
Antagonist
Muscles that oppose or reverse a movement, this muscle is stretched and relaxed when the agonist is active, it may also act as a decelerator of the prime mover
Synergistco-contractors
Muscles that assist/cooperate to produce the same movement
