Sensory Demonstration NB(061) Flashcards
Pathogenesis of High–Frequency Hearing Loss?
➢ High-frequency hearing loss occurs when the sensory hearing cells in the cochlea are damaged. These hair cells are responsible for translating the sounds into electrical impulses, which the brain eventually interprets as recognizable sound
Why does hearing loss typically affects the higher frequencies before it affects the lower frequencies?
High-frequency sounds are perceived in the lower part of the cochlea, while the hair cells that perceive low-frequency sounds are located near the top. Because of this, hearing loss typically affects the higher frequencies before it affects the lower frequencies
Hearing loss that occurs as the result of the aging process is called….
presbycusis
Hearing loss that occurs as the result of the aging process is called presbycusis. This is a slow process which usually affects both ears equally, so it’s often difficult to notice. One of it’s first signs is the :
inability to understand speech in noisy environments and high-frequency sounds
3 common Ototoxic drug classes?
-salicylates (aspirin) in large quantities
-drugs used in chemotherapy treatments
- aminoglycoside antibiotics
2 diseases that can cause High–Frequency Hearing Loss?
-Meniere’s disease
-chronic otitis media in children
Define Noise–Induced Hearing Loss(NIHL)
➢ NIHL is defined by National Code of Practice (2004) as hearing impairment arising from exposure to excessive noise at work, and is also commonly known as industrial deafness
Sounds affected in Noise – Induced Hearing Loss(NIHL)?
- Affects speech perception by reducing perception of consonant sounds (p,b,k,s,z etc) needed for speech clarity
