Benefit: faster and cheaper for government
Risk: Delay in MD care, adverse effects, and risks are usually greater than simply using self care

Schedule 1: prescription only
Schedule 2: Behind the counter
Schedule 3: out front in pharmacy only
Schedule 4: Unscheduled, get anywhere
(USA lacks 2 and 3)
Public’s Opinion on OTCs
Safe because they are available almost everywhere. De-medicinization (see as consumer product)

Assess symptoms, make recommendation
provide info on drug use
respond to specific questions
monitor drug use
Bad parts of Pharmacist as OTC adviser
Not enough questions asked, wrong advice, don’t know answer
Pay less attention to OTC
