What are the first 3 symptoms that occur in cold for day or 2
Sore throat, rhinorrhea( runny nose), sneezing
What symptoms of cold develop around day 3
Nasal congestion (usually one nostril), sinus headache, plugged ears (moreso in kids)
How long does it take for cough to appear in cold
Around 6 days and can linger
What are the 3 chest colds in increasing severity
Bronchitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia
-bronchiolitis more concerning in kids
What is congested/productive cough and is it useful
Chest congestion and expectoration of phlegm. Is useful
What is congested/non-productive cough and is it useful
Associated with chest congestion but only some phlegm. Becomes productive, has one medication to help
What is dry/non-productive cough and is it useful
Cough not from chest congestion and no phlegm. Is not useful
How do colds in children differ
Infants: Increased frequency, but need to be bit more cautious
early fever of about 39, Gi upset causing diarrhea
Children: less fever than babies and more like adult
What are ways to spread cold
Direct contact, inhaled droplets, eye/nose contact with hands. Possibility of kissing
Does cold and wet weather cause colds?
No, causes a vasomotor response due to going in/out and having drastic temperature change causing nose to run
What is a concern with hand washing and children
Over doing it and wash hands too frequently, making hands raw
How does influenza differ from CC
Hits hard, fast onset and bad for couple days, systemic symptoms of body aches, cough more severe and dry, spiking fever, fatigue, last hours to weeks
How does CC differ from influenza
Builds over 48 hours, runny nose and eyes, stuffy and congested, sneezing and coughing, 3-10 days
How many deaths from flu are elderly
90% as requiring fever and cough as system misses many elderly patient. These are not always exhibited
What flu symptom in elderly is similar to fever
Malaise
