Colic Flashcards
Clinical Picture
Best to be calm. Moment of spasm in stomach, back to normal after a moment. Diagnose by exclusion, no therapy.
What is the clinical occurrence of colic
3hr a day, 3 days week, over 3 weeks
inconsolable, usually in evening, 10-40% babies, disappears after few months suddenly
True colic is that besides the crying baby is fine (gains weight and feels well
How do you exclude it from teething pain
Could not find an alternative to provide relief. Teething pain doesn’t last long and type of feeding doesn’t influence.
What are other theories for colic
Trapped gas (can solve by burping), gut spasms (legs and arms pulled to chest), GERD, constipation (very rare for breast feeding), allergies to breast milk (usually mothers diet)
What percent find the deficiency/organic cause of colic
5%, 95% find nothing
What are some non-drug treatments
re-positioning, stimulation, de-stimulation, change formula, dietary change if breast feeding
Doing one at a time to see if helps
How does anti-colic bottle work
Causes less gulping of air, reducing the gas not colic
What is Simethicone
de-foaming agent to help with discomfort of trapped gas. Is very safe and undigested. Is a surface agent so effectiveness is very low that it will capture all air bubbles
Worth try
What is Dicycomine (bentylol)
Anti-spasmatic. Better than placebo but is medication for IBS and not safe for infants to take as will give some side effects, rare recommendation
What is gripe water
Ginger and fennel, Use to contain sodium bicarbonate but was removed
What is probiotic treatment
Promise, but have in breast milk and hard to know which ones
Very safe to use, new bacteria is not a worry
-Third on list to choose
