what is the skin barrier dysfunction
Breaks down and over reaction occurs, skin is susceptible and begins to itch
stages of eczema
actute, sub-acute, chronic (scaling)
-flare up lasts about 7 days if irritant removed
Presentation
young children (80% before 5)
-blistering to dry skin to scale
-Pruritis: scratch itch scratch and distrubed sleep
-face especiallt in infants (hand elbow wrist knees)
Allergic march (family history)
if in familiy more likely to have
eczema > asthma> allergic rhinitis
Prickly heat
Sweat stays on skin, away when clean skin
Worsened by what
Low humidty, stress, irritants(clothing, sweating), allergins (dust, food)
-winter is worse, more flare up
General treatment
-avoid triggers
-gloves
-cotton over wool over synthetic clothing
Counteract dry skin
Baths, weather exposure, humidifier, cream
Treatment of acute flare ups
Weeping lesions
-use plain water for 20 min qid for 2-3days or longer contact
Can steroids be used in weeping stage
yes. otherwise flare up will last longer. heal crack and weeping skin
How long does acute stage last
4-8 days
Wwhat change to steroid for when becomes more chronic
change from cream to ointment. if can afford can alternate between two

3 weeks max
