When the power of God is upon us, it has a physical effect. An individual is so completely overshadowed by the Spirit that to all outward appearances normal bodily functions are suspended, it drains the natural man of his strength. So it was with Moses, Daniel, Paul, Lehi, Nephi, Alma.
Why was Joseph Smith “induced” to write this history?
Joseph believe that he should always reaffirm what he saw in his vision –
“I have actually seen a vision; and who am I that I can withstand God, or why does the world think to make me deny what I have actually seen? For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation.”
What do we learn from the First Vision?
We learned through the first vision that God the Father and the Son are two separate beings, and that the Holy Ghost is separate from both of them as the 3rd member of the Godhead. The First Vison restored the knowledge of God to the earth and what God is.
What was Joseph Smith’s reaction to this scripture?
While Joseph was reading James 1:5, the words impressed his mind with great force. He continued to reflect upon it over and over again. He came to the conclusion that he must do as James directed or “stay in darkness”, so he would asked God and tell him what was in his heart.
