Schizophrenia Flashcards
Extrapyramidol SE (EPS)
A group of sx related to irregular movements
- dystopias
- akathsias
- Parkinsonism
Treatment for EPS
Anticholinergics
- benztropine
- diphenhydramine
DSM5 for schizophrenia
Negative sx: -decreased interest -lack of emotion/speech -social withdrawal -loss of motivation Positive sx: ONE MUST BE PRESENT -hallucinations -delusions -disorganized thinking/behavior
Schizophrenia MOA
Altered brain structure/chemistry involving increased DA and glutamine
Difference in SE of first gen and second gen antipsychotics
FGA: increased EPS, decreased weight gain/metabolic SEs
SGA: decreased EPS, increased weight gain/metabolic SEs
Differences in mechanisms of FGA and SGA
Both block DA
Second Gen also block 5HT receptors moreso than First Gen
Low potency FGA
Chlorpromazine
Thioridazine
Mid potency FGA
Loxapine
Perphenazine
High potency FGA
Haloperidol
Fluphenazine
Lowest risk of EPS
Quetiapine
Highest risk of EPS
FGAs
Risperidone
Paliperidone
Lowest risk of metabolic SEs
FGAs
Aripiprazole
Ziprasidone
Highest risk of metabolic SEs
Clozapine
Olanzapine
Quetiapine
Highest risk of QT prolongation
Haloperidol
Thioridazine
Ziprasidone
Highest risk of Stroke/TIA
Risperidone
