Scapular Region and Shoulder Joint Flashcards
Origin of deltoid
spine and acromion of scapula, lateral third of clavicle
what are the true rotator cuff muscles?
supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor
insertion of deltoid
deltoid tuberosity of humerus
action of anterior, middle and posterior deltoid
anterior: flexion, medial rotation middle: abduction from 15-90 degrees posterior: extension and lateral rotation
innervation of deltoid
axillary nerve (C5-6)
origin of teres major
inferior angle of scapula
insertion of teres major
medial lip of the intertubercular sulcus of humerus
action of teres major
adduction, medial rotation of humerus
innervation of teres major
lower subscapular nerve (c5-C6)
origin of subscapularis
subscapular fossa
insertion of subscapularis
lesser tubercle of humerus **is the only muscle attached to this)
action of subscapularis
medial rotation of humerus
innervation of subscapularis
upper and lower subscapularis nerves (c5, C6, c7)
what is another name for the middle subscapular nerve?
thoracodorsal nerve
origin of teres minor?
lateral border of scapula
insertion of teres minor
inferior facet of greater tubercle
action of teres minor
lateral rotation, adduction, extension of humerus
innervation of teres minor
axillary nerve (C5, c6)
origin of infraspinatus
infraspinous fossa of scapula
insertion of infraspinatus
middle facet of greater tubercle
action of infraspinatus
lateral rotation of humerus
innervation of infraspinatus
suprascapular nerve (C5, c6)
origin of supraspinatus
supraspinous fossa of scapula
insertion of supraspinatus
upper facet of greater tubercle
action of supraspinatus
abduction of humerus from 0-15degrees
innervation of supraspinatus
suprascapular nerve (c4, C5, c6)
what are the positions of the suprascapular artery and nerve relative to the superior transverse scapular ligament?
suprascapular artery goes above the ligament, suprascapular nerve goes below the ligament
type of joints between sternoclavicular, acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints?
synovial
what kind of joint is the scapulothoracic joint?
physiologic joint (non synovial joint)

what ligaments are associated with the acromioclavicular joint?
acromioclavicular liagment, coracoacromial ligament, coracoclavicular ligament consisting of the trapezoid ligament and the conoid ligament
what joint is commonly associated with a “shoulder separation”?
acromioclavicular joint
what is the joint that usually is fractured if there is a “clavicular fracture”
the sternoclavicular, because there is no where else for the stress to go
what comprises the glenohumeral joint?
the head of the humerus and the glenoid cavity of the scapula

what is the most common bursitis in the shoulder?
subacromial bursa gets impinged between acromion and supraspinatus tendon
dx: US or MRI
tx: corticosteroid injections
what damage can the dislocation of the glenohumeral joint cause?
damage to the glenoid labrum, ligaments supporting the GH joint, nerves crossing the GH joint (axillary, radial), tendons crossing the GH joint (supraspinatus)
*most likely will damage the supraspinatus*

what is the difference between a shoulder dislocation and shoulder separation?
a dislocation is the disarticulation of the glenohumeral joint
a separation is when the acromioclavicular joint is disarticulated
what muscle abducts the arm from 0-15degrees?
supraspinatus
what muscle abducts the arm from 15-90 degrees?
deltoid
what muscle abducts the arm more than 90 degrees?
serratus anterior, via superior rotation of the glenous fossa
