Safety and Quality Nur1 Flashcards
Device to aid in the mobilization of a patient or patient’s extemity
Restraint
Process of data collection and analysis that aids in finding the real cause of the problem and working on dealing with it rather than just dealing with its effects
Root cause analysis
Point at which a person is not always willing to accept pain of greater severity or duration
Tolerance
An error of commission or omission that could have harmed a patient, but serious harm did not occur as a result of chance, prevention, or mitigation
Near miss
An unexpected occurrence involving death or serious physical or psychological injury, or the risk thereof
Sentinel event
Undesired, unintended, and often unpredictable responses to medication
Adverse drug reactions
Predictable and often unavoidable adverse effect produced at a usual therapeutic dose
Side effects
An effect that is greater when two medications are combined rather than when the medications are administered alone
Synergist drug effect
The highest level of the drug in a patient’s body is the highest after repeated doses of the medication
Peak
Common cutaneous adverse drug reaction, resulting from the interaction of ultraviolet radiations with drugs
Photosensitivity
When a person’s physical or mental health appears to improve after taking a placebo
Placebo effect
Harmful impact of a drug in the body, leading to sever adverse events or organ damage
Drug toxicity
When a medication first begins to take effect
Onset
Length of time a medication produces its desired therapeutic effect
Duration
Chemical substance that binds to and activates certain receptors on cells, causing a response in the body to the medication
Agonist
A substance or drug that stops the action or effect of another substance or drug
Antagonist
Reaction between two or more drugs or between a drug and a food, beverage, or supplement
Drug interaction
Situation when the combining effects of two drugs equal the sum of the effects or the two drugs acting independently
Additive drug effect
The concentration or amount of a drug required to produce a defined effect
Potency
An unintended act (either by commission or omission) or one that does not achieve its intended act
Error
The range of doses at which a medication is effective without unacceptable adverse events
Therapeutic events
The degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge
