Procedures used to eliminate any microorganisms from an area. Also called sterile technique
Surgical Asepsis
Wound infection; a patient usually experiences localized symptoms such as pain, tenderness, warmth, an redness at the wound site
Localized Infection
Microorganisms capable of producing disease
Pathogen
Permanent residents of the skin and within the body, where they survive and multiply without causing illness
Normal flora
An infection that affects the entire body instead of just a single organ or part and can become fatal if undetected and untreated
Systemic
An unexpected increase in the number of disease cases in a specific geographical area
Epidemic
An unexpected increase in the number of disease cases widespread across several countries or continents
Pandemic
A common type of systemic infection, is the presence of pathogens in the blood or other tissues throughout the body
Sepsis
Term used to describe a spread of infection from an initial site to other areas of the body
