Gas Exchange Flashcards
abnormal condition in which a person must sit or stand to breathe comfortably
Orthopnea
Sensation of shortness of breath
Dyspnea
Abnormally rapid rate of breathing
Tachypnea
Method of encouraging voluntary deep breathing by providing visual feedback to patients of the inspiratory volume they have achieved
Incentive spirometer
Muscles in the thoracic cage that assist with respiration
Accessory muscles
Inadequate cellular oxygenation that may result from a deficiency in the delivery or use of oxygen at the cellular level
Hypoxia
Arterial blood oxygen level less than 60 mmHg; low oxygen level in the blood
Hypoxemia
Decreased blood supply to a body part such as skin tissue or to an organ such as the heart
Ischemia
Bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes caused by an excess of deoxygenation hemoglobin in the blood or a structural defect in the hemoglobin molecule
Cyanosis
Percentage of available binding sites on hemoglobin that are bound with oxygen in arterial blood
SaO2
Measurement of how much oxygen the blood is carrying as a percentage of the maximum it could carry
SpO2
Measurement of the partial pressure of oxygen in the arterial blood
PaO2
The measurement of the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood and how well carbon dioxide can move out of the body
PaCO2
Measurement of the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood and the balance of acids and bases, known as pH
ABG’s
Inhalation of foreign object or substance into the airway
Aspiration
