Caring
Deep physical, psychological, and spiritual connection or engagement between a nurse and a patient
Providing presence
To come in contact with another person, often conveying caring, emotional support, encouragement, or tenderness
Touch
Paying attention to the whole person- mind, body, and spirit——includes listening for main and supportive ideas, giving appropriate feedback, and paying attention to the other person’s total communication; including the content, intent, and feelings expressed
Active listening
An indepth knowledge of the patient’s patterns of responses; fosters skilled clinical decision making
Knowing the patient
A form of caring that offers a sense of connectedness: intrapersonally(connected with oneself), interpersonally(connected with others and the environment), and transpersonally (connected with the unseen, God, or a higher power)
Spiritual caring
Delivery of healthcare based on ethical principles and standards of care
Ethics of care
Form of nonverbal communication, which successfully influences a patient’s comfort and security, enhances self-esteem, increases confidence of caregivers, and improves mental well-being
Caring touch
Form of touch that protects a nurse and/or patient
Protective touch
Touch when performing a task or procedure
Task-oriented touch
Holistic evidence-based therapy and is an approved complementary and alternative medicine method that incorporates the intentional and compassionate use of touch to help patients find their inner balance
