Gas Exchange Nur 2 Flashcards
Group of therapies used to mobilize pulmonary secretions for expectoration.
Chest physiotherapy (CPT)
Bulging of the tissues at the nail base caused by insufficient oxygenation at the periphery, resulting from conditions such as chronic emphysema and congenital heart disease.
Clubbing
Sensation of shortness of breath
Dyspnea
Greater-than-normal amounts of carbon dioxide in the blood; also called hypercarbia
Hypercapnia
Arterial blood oxygen level less than 60 mm Hg; low oxygen level in the blood.
Hypoxemia
Abnormal condition in which a person must sit or stand to breathe comfortably
Orthopnea
the accidental inhalation of foreign material, like food, liquid, or stomach contents, into the airway and lungs, disrupting the normal process of oxygen intake and carbon dioxide removal
Aspiration
A handheld device that deliver medicines in the form of aerosols to add moisture and help control your respiratory symptoms
Hand-held nebulizer
Widening of the nostrils upon inhalation as a manifestation of respiratory distress
Nasal flaring
A painless, noninvasive method of measuring the saturation of oxygen in a person’s blood
Pulse oximetry
The use of accessory muscles to breath and the visible pulling inward of the skin between the ribs (intercostal spaces) or in the neck area during inhalation, which occurs when someone is struggling to breathe and is using extra muscles to draw air into their lungs, indicating respiratory distress
Retractions
An external device that is attached to an metered-dose inhaler to allow for better drug delivery by enhanced actuation and inhalation coordination
Spacer
A lung condition where the walls of the tiny air sacs (alveoli) are damaged, causing them to rupture and create larger air spaces, significantly reducing the surface area available for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and bloodstream, ultimately impairing breathing due to decreased gas exchange efficiency
Emphysema
