Q

A theory stating that the molecules that make up all matter are in constant motion, and the temperature of a substance is directly proportional to the average kinetic energy of its molecules

A

Q

Which of the following best describes the triple point?

A

Point where a substance can exist as a solid, liquid, and gas

If the temperature is raised above the triple point, the substance can only exist as a liquid and gas.

Q

On a hot summer day, you place a cup of ice water outside. Using your knowledge of states of matter, describe what will likely happen in three to five sentences.

A

The solid pieces of ice will absorb energy from the hot environment. As heat is added, the forces holding the water molecules together will break, and the water molecules will separate from one another.

As this happens, the solid ice will lose its shape and turn into water as the molecules move away from one another. As more heat is absorbed, the water molecules will move even more rapidly and spread further apart as the water evaporates into gas.
