Cardiovascular System (AP) Flashcards
Vessels that carry blood away from the heart toward other body parts
Arteries
The portion of the cardiac cycle in which the heart expels blood
Systole
Vessels that carry blood toward the heart from other body parts
Veins
Release of tension in a muscle
Diastole (otherwise known as Relaxation)
Clear pale yellow component of blood that carries red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets throughout the body
Plasma
Protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body
Hemoglobin
A category of white blood cells that includes natural killer cells, B-cells, helper T-cells, and cytotoxic T-cells
lymphocyte
A solution of a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid. Buffers maintain the proper pH of the body
Buffer
Which of the following blood components is responsible transporting oxygen?
Red Blood Cells
How many Chambers does the heart have?
Four - Two Ventricles and Two atriums
The ______ atrium accepts blood from the lungs.
Left
The ____ atrium accepts blood from the body.
Right
The _____ ventricle pumps blood to the body.
Left
What are the functions of veins?
One purpose is to collect oxygen-poor blood throughout your body and carry it back to your heart. The other purpose is to carry oxygen-rich blood from your lungs to your heart.
two chambers of the heart that have thicker walls. Why would these chambers be thicker?
The right and left ventricles have thicker walls than the two atria. Thicker muscular walls are needed to generate the pressure to pump blood out of the heart to the pulmonary and systemic circuits.
