Roots and Stems Flashcards
What is the function of a root?
To absorb water and as anchorage.
What are the three types of roots?
Primary root, secondary root, root hairs.
What is a primary root?
The first root that emerges from a seed.
What are secondary roots?
Roots that emerge from a primary root and serve as anchors.
What are root hairs?
Short strings that protrude from the longitudinal section of a root and absorb water.
What are the parts of a longitudinal section?
The maturation region, elongation region, meristematic region, and root cap.
What is the root cap?
Harder cells that grow downward and plow through rocks (like phineas and ferb’s terra drill 5000)
What is the meristematic region?
Where mitosis occurs.
What are the two types of meristems?
Apical meristems and cambiums.
Do apical meristems grow lengthwise or widthwise?
Lengthwise at the top and the bottom of a root.
Do cambiums grow lengthwise or widthwise?
Widthwise.
Are cambiums always there?
No.
What is elongation?
When cells grow lengthwise.
What is maturation?
When cells get jobs and become specialized.
What are the three types of root systems?
Tap root, fibrous, adventitious.
