Families of Organic Compounds Flashcards
What is the first family of organic compounds?
Carbohydrates
What elements make up a carbohydrate?
Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.
What is the ratio of the hydrogen to the oxygen in terms of the number of molecules?
2:1
What is the first type of carbohydrate?
Monosaccharides
What is another name for a monosaccharide?
Simple sugars.
What does monosaccharide mean?
One sugar
What is an example of a monosaccharide?
Glucose
What is the chemical compostion of glucose?
C6H1206
How many carbon atoms does a monosaccharide have?
Anywhere from 3 to 7 carbon atoms
How many carbon atoms do most monosaccharides have?
5 atoms (pentose) or 6 atoms (hexose)
Why do our cells need carbohydrates?
Cells die without energy.
How do carbs work?
An enzyme called amalyze breaks down the carbs which have energy stored in them.
What is the second type of Carbohydrate?
Disaccharides
What is another name for disaccharides and polysaccharides?
Complex sugars.
What does disaccharide mean?
Two sugars.
How many monosacharides are in a disaccharide?
Two.
What are two examples of disaccharides?
Sucrose and lactose
What are the chemical compositions of sucrose and lactose?
C12H22O11
What is the third type of carbohydrate?
Polysaccharides
What does polysaccharide mean?
Many sugars
How many monosaccharides are in a polysaccharide?
Many. A Polysaccharide is a polymer of Monosaccharides.
What are examples of polysaccharides?
Cellulose, glycogen, and starches.
How many monosaccharides are in cellulose?
about 2000 units
What is the function of cellulose in life?
Cellulose makes up strong cell walls.
How many monosaccharides are in glycogen?
About 12-18 units.
What is the function of glycogen?
Glycogen stores excess carbs in animals.
Where is most of the glycogen located in the body?
the liver
What are starches?
The complex carbs that store excess carbs in plants
What makes a starch different from other carbs?
Starches have branching stems
What is the second family of organic compounds?
lipids
What elements make up a lipid?
Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.
What is the ratio between Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen?
There is no ratio, but there are more hydrogen molecules in a lipid than in a Carbohydrate.
What is the first type of lipid?
Fatty acids
What is the chemical formula for a carboxyl group?
O

What is the third type of lipid?
Steriods
What is an example of a steriod?
cholesterol
What is one of the functions of a lipid?
To store energy
What are steriods used for?
They are a part of the cell membrane
What happens when there are too many or too less lipids n your body?
That is bad. There needs to be a balance.
What type of steroid makes up a cell membrane?
Phospolipds
What makes up a phospolipid?
Three phospate groups connected to a glycerol
What is the third family of organic compounds?
Proteins
What elements make up a protein?
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen.
What is a polymer?
A long chain of repeating units
What is a protein?
A polymer of amino acids
