1
Q
Risk factors for rhabdomyolysis
A
- prolonged seizure
- collapse/coma
- ecstasy
- crush injury
- McArdle’s syndrome
- drugs: statins
2
Q
Investigation findings in rhabdomyolysis
A
- AKI
- disproportionate creatinine
- high CK
- myoglobinuria
- hypocalcaemia, high phosphate
- hyperkalaemia
- metabolic acidosis
3
Q
What causes the low calcium and high phsophate found in rhabdomyolysis?
A
myocytes release phosphate
myoglobin binds calcium
4
Q
Management of rhabdomyolysis

- IV fluids to maintain good urine output
- urinary alkalinization is sometimes used (Sodium bicarb)
