What is EPO?
A
haematopoietic growth factor that stimulates the production of erythrocytes

When do the kidneys secrete EPO?
A
in response to cellular hypoxia.

Side effects of EPO
A
- accelerated hypertension
=> risk of encephalopathy and seizures - bone aches
- flu-like symptoms
- rashes, urticaria
- raised PV => risk of thrombosis
- iron deficiency 2nd to increased erythropoiesis

Why may patients fail to respond to EPO
A
iron deficiency
inadequate dose
infection/inflammation
hyperparathyroid bone disease
aluminium toxicity
