Contrast Nephrotoxicity Flashcards
1
Q
Timing of Contrast Nephrotoxicity vs Nephropathy
A
Nephrotoxicity - within 3 days of administration of contrast
Nephropathy - 2-5 days following contrast
2
Q
Risk factors which increase likelihood of contrast nephrotoxicity
A
- renal impairment (especially diabetic nephropathy)
- age > 70 years
- dehydration
- cardiac failure
- use of nephrotoxic drugs (e.g. NSAIDs)
3
Q
how much must the creatinine rise for it to be considered a contrast induced nephrotoxicity
A
25%
4
Q
What scans/procedures put patients at risk of Contrast nephrotoxicity?
A
- CT with contrast
- Coronary angiography/ PCI
5
Q
How should contrast nephrotoxicity be prevented in those who are high risk?
A
- IVF (0.9% NaCl)
- sodium bicarbonate
6
Q
Why is metformin withheld for 48hrs prior to contrast?
A
risk of lactic acidosis.
