Retinal diseases Flashcards
Macular Degeneration
Dry MD
- yellow deposits (drusen) accumulate in the macula
Wet MD;
- Blood underneath macula
Symptoms
- Blnk spots
- Distortion in central vision
Cause;
- Age, smoking, diet, genetic
- Receptors are lost due to accumulation of toxics
No treatment
Glaucoma
Increase of eye pressure. Certain amount needed to keep the eye round, but too much causes oxigen loss. The eye creats ocular fluid which builds up
Nerve fibers get damiged, loss of peripheral vision follows (varies)
Treatable, but only to stop spread, lost RGC’s are lost, sooner the better
Retinitis Pigmentosa
Genetic disorder
Progressive degeneration of the receptors, first the rods then the cones
Pigment deposits at affected parts of the retina, retina falls apart.
Starts with night blindness (not necessarily sign), follows wiht loss of peripheral vision, then tunnel vision into full bindness.
No cure
