Gestalt laws Flashcards
Proximity
Objects close together are grouped
Similarity
Parts that are similar are grouped
Connectedness
Parts are grouped when they’re connected
Common fate
Parts that move together/in the same direction are grouped together (random dot kinematograms use this principle, similarity of motion, to define objects by just motion)
Closure
Closing a gap to make a whole. Convex (move inward) shapes are preferred over concave (move outward) shapes
Collinearity
Good continuation. We prefer flowing lines over separate shapes
Symmetry
Contours that form a symmetrical shape are grouped over contours that form an assymetrical shape
Pregnanz/good form
Reduction to the simplest forms is preferred. EG in the olympic circles, you see circles not the parts.
*all laws have influences of others. Eg here good continuation/closure are hints too
Figure-Ground
Some region is the figure, other is background that continues behind the figure
