Parts vs Wholes Flashcards
Wholistic analysis
A face is not recognized by its parts, but by configuration of the parts, ie relation they have to each other;
- What color are my eyes; difficult
- Mustache effect; when shaved, you see difference but not immediately what is different
Experiment parts vs whole hypothesis
Learned house/face and later tested to recognize parts of faces/houses. Houses were recognized but faces a lot better in the whole condition (normal subjects)
Composite effect
Faces are processed as a whole, also reason why it’s difficult to answer;
Are these top halves the same or different.
When slightly off centered, you can easily see, as with upside down pictures. But when it makes a whole face its harder
Remembering faces
In an experiment where they had to scan for a subject, the fixaded faces were noticed as well. Even for faces that were glanced over briefly, exept when you turn them upside down.
Meaning: we have strong memory for faces.
